Republic Services Hosts U.S. Department Of Labor Secretary At Company’s Anaheim Facility

ANAHEIM, Calif. – April 28, 2011 – Republic Services of Southern California’s (NYSE:RSG) Anaheim facility was chosen by U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Hilda L. Solis to launch a federal initiative on health and safety in the workplace and the steps needed to prevent heat illness. Republic operates two highly successful safety programs that address employee heat stress.

“We believe that Secretary Solis’ choice of our facility to highlight worker safety recognizes Republic’s on-going commitment to worker safety,” said Jim Ambroso, area president of Southern California, Republic. “Safety is a choice, a lifestyle and a commitment. Safety is, and will always remain our number one priority.”

Secretary Solis toured Republic’s Anaheim transfer station, materials recovery facility and participated in an employee safety training program where she engaged in an informal question and answer session with the audience. Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait, Cal-OSHA Deputy Director Chris Lee, representatives from the Orange County Labor Federation and members of Teamsters Local 396 were also present for the event.

“If you’re working outdoors, you’re at risk for heat-related illnesses that can cause serious medical problems and even death,” said Secretary Solis.  “But heat illness can be prevented.  This Labor Department campaign will reach across the country with a very simple message: water, rest and shade.”

One of the main goals of the Labor Department’s national awareness campaign is to get the word out about the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke so workers can get out of the sun and get help before it’s too late.

Republic has developed effective safety programs that address heat stress: Focus 6 and 101 Days of Summer Safety. Both campaigns go beyond the basics and have enjoyed extraordinary success, resulting in seven consecutive years of a reduction in accident frequency.
