Republic Services Of Indianapolis Cleans Up After Superbowl

INDIANAPOLIS –February 10, 2012— While fans were watching the Giants and Patriots play football, another team in blue uniforms worked in the background and hoped to go unnoticed. The 75 men and women of Republic Services (NYSE:RSG) of Indianapolis collected and hauled away nearly 500 tons of waste and recycling from the football stadium, the Convention Center and the Super Bowl Village.

"Super Bowl clean-up is a massive project," said John Drier, general manager for Republic Services of Indianapolis. "This is nothing new for us. The Company has cleaned up after Triple Crown races, previous Super Bowls and President Obama's inauguration."

As of today, Republic has hauled about 336 tons of waste and 141 tons of recycling from the three venues. Based on these numbers, the Company anticipates hauling in excess of 500 tons when the post-game cleanup is completed over the weekend.

Ninety-five percent of Republic's work focused on the Super Bowl Village; game organizers estimated that more than 1 million people visited the Village over a 10-day period, including more than 150,000 on game day. For 10 days preceding the game, tens of thousands of people visited the Village nightly and Republic crews worked until 5 a.m. the next morning to clean up.

Republic manages the waste and recycling for the Lucas Oil Stadium and began formal planning for the clean-up began mid- 2011. But unlike other games, thousands of additional seats were installed for the Super Bowl, adding more fans and more trash. Additional security, strict access schedules and game-day traffic created a few additional challenges for Republic garbage truck drivers.

Drivers had to conform to precise schedules as they were allowed a 20-minute window during half time to remove a 42-cubic yard compactor box and attach a new one. The truck was not allowed back on the property until after midnight game night. The Company will service additional containers repeatedly until cleanup is completed.

"After the game, most people were talking about the big plays or the commercials. Our team was taking care of business so that before you knew it, you couldn't even tell that nearly 250,000 people were there," said Drier.
