Leading the solid waste industry in safety performance, Republic Services has and always will put safety as its number one priority. Republic Services has worked hard through the challenges and has found solutions to staying safe with employee engagement, compliance and commitment.
Solid waste workers have the seventh-highest mortality rate among all industries due to incidents involving heavy machinery used in management and processing waste, both inside facilities and while out on the road. However, the waste and recycling industry has put forth many efforts in the past several years to improve its safety performance.
Republic Services has learned to train their employees and encourage the safest operating practices by developing several effective safety programs. The company has launched two programs that have both seen great success including the 101 Days of Summer Safety and Focus 6.
In 2001, Republic Services developed the 101 Days of Summer Safety program due to an increase in incidents and injuries during the summer months. Focus 6 was developed in 2007 to educate Republic’s employees on the skills necessary to avoid the six most serious types of losses in the industry including intersections, employees, backing, roll-overs, pedestrians and rear collisions.
