Dramatically Reducing Emissions
In April 2011, a Republic Services operation in York, Pennsylvania, began converting their 65-vehicle fleet of trash collection trucks from diesel to compressed natural gas (CNG) power. The conversion was completed in early 2012. Through this conversion, the division will annually displace over 640,500 gallons of diesel and reduce nearly 160,000 pounds of emissions.
This is the equivalent of eliminating 38 gallons of diesel per truck, per day—and is just one local example being repeated with
natural gas vehicle fleet investments, which are being made at Republic Services’ divisions across the country. Replacing our older diesel models with clean-burning natural gas trucks will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and ensure air quality improvements.
Converting older trucks to natural gas will deliver plenty of environmental benefits, including:
Up to 90% cleaner air
Tailpipe carbon monoxide emissions reduced by 70%
Non-methane organic gas as well as nitrogen oxides reduced by 87%
Less carbon dioxide produced per mile
