ALLIED WASTE DEDICATES FIRST COMPRESSED

NATURAL GAS (CNG) REFUSE AND RECYCLING FLEET WITH PLANS TO OPEN FIRST PUBLIC CNG FUELING FACILITY IN IDAHO

Project Supports Allied Waste’s New CNG Fleet

US Department of Energy (DOE) – Clean Cities Coalition Grant

Aids in Fleet Conversion

BOISE, Idaho—November 10, 2009—Allied Waste Services of Boise, a Republic Services company (NYSE:RSG), today unveiled a compressed natural gas (CNG) station that will fuel the company’s CNG refuse truck fleet and will also serve as the first public fueling station in Idaho starting next year. Republic has a contract with the City of Boise to provide all solid waste and recycling services for residential and commercial customers in the Greater Boise area.  Clean Energy, the leading provider of natural gas for transportation in North America, provided the fueling infrastructure.

“We believe that CNG, because it is a domestic fuel resource, is a positive move for the country and will help us achieve energy independence,” said Kory Coleman, area president Mountain Region, Republic Services. “The use of these clean-burning CNG trucks as replacements for our older diesel models aligns with the City of Boise’s strategic plan to achieve consistent compliance with increasingly stringent standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.”

“This new fueling station is another crucial step in making cleaner, alternative fuels an everyday reality in our valley,” said Boise Mayor David Bieter. “This project is a perfect example of how through partnerships such as the Clean Cities Coalition, we can make real progress in lowering our carbon footprint and improving the quality of our air.”

Using CNG helps lower harmful emissions like nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, toxic pollutants and greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the air. The public fueling station, which will be complete in 2010, will make it possible for individuals, fleet operators and local governments to switch to CNG fuel.

Raymond P. Burke, vice president, Clean Energy, said, “We are very grateful for the confidence that Allied Waste Services and the City of Boise have placed in Clean Energy, and we are committed to fully supporting their leadership efforts to help protect environmental quality in Idaho. Fleet operators and refuse companies across America are adopting natural gas fuel because it has proven to significantly lower harmful emissions compared to diesel and gasoline. In addition, clean-burning natural gas is abundantly available domestically, and its use as a transportation fuel greatly helps to reduce our dependence on foreign oil."

The project received support from a U. S. Department of Energy – Clean Cities Coalition matching grant that paid for the public fueling equipment, additional CNG trucks and various site improvements. The Treasure Valley Clean Cities Coalition, in collaboration with Allied Waste and the City of Boise, applied for the grant.  Allied Waste is currently serving Boise with 12 CNG trucks. The grant will allow the company to replace another 28 diesel trucks with CNG trucks, a significant portion of its valley-wide fleet.
