REPUBLIC SERVICES’ JEFFERSON CITY LANDFILL GAS-TO-ENERGY PROJECT WINS 2009 PROJECT OF THE YEAR AWARD

One of three Republic Services Landfill Projects Honored

by EPA Landfill Methane Outreach Program

Republic Wins Three of Eight Awards

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.—January 12, 2010— The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) selected the Republic Services (NYSE:RSG) Jefferson City Landfill gas-to-energy project (LFGTE) as a LFGTE Project of the Year for 2009. Republic’s Ox Mountain Landfill in Half Moon Bay, California and Oak Grove Landfill in Winder, Georgia also were honored today at the annual LMOP conference in Baltimore. EPA honored a total of eight projects.

Each year, EPA recognizes the latest accomplishments of landfill methane projects that have reduced emissions of methane and created renewable energy. LMOP acknowledges the projects for excellence in innovation and creativity, success in promoting project development, and achieving environmental and economic benefits.

“We are honored that this project has been recognized as beneficial to the environment and the community,” said Kevin Walbridge, senior vice president Midwest Region, Republic Services. “This project aligns with our overall goals and demonstrates our commitment to investing in gas-to-energy projects and other renewable energy solutions at landfills.”

Ameresco, the nation’s largest independent energy services company, designed, built, owns and operates the renewable energy plant at the landfill.  A 3-mile pipeline carries the landfill gas from the landfill to an engine facility located at the Jefferson City Correctional Center.  The gas is used to generate 3.2 megawatts of electricity.  The green power, which is purchased by Columbia Water & Light, provides enough electricity to meet the needs of nearly 2,000 Columbia Water & Light customers.  It also reduces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to planting 31,000 acres of trees and removing almost 28,000 vehicles each year from Missouri roads.

Additionally, the waste heat generated from the engines is captured to provide steam and hot water for two state-owned correctional centers.  Greenhouse gas emissions reductions from using the waste heat to offset natural gas in the boilers are equivalent to heating 1,500 homes, planting 1,300 acres of trees and removing almost 1,000 vehicles each year from Missouri roads.

In 2009, Republic brought 10 new landfill gas-to-energy projects online. The Company has developed LFGTE projects at more than one-third of its 213 landfills. These 74 projects include:

  • 52 electric generating plants
  • 13 Medium Btu plants that provide LFG to industrial users
  • 6 High Btu plants that produce pipeline quality gas
  • 3 Leachate evaporators

Also, the Company combined a first-of-its-kind solar technology with an existing biogas-to-energy system to turn its Tessman Road Landfill in San Antonio, Texas into a sustainable energy park.

The 52 electric projects generate 323 MW of electricity, enough to power about 192,000 homes.  The 22 other projects provide or process more than 58,000 scfm of gas, energy needed to heat almost 200,000 homes. The environmental benefits of all of the projects combined are equivalent to removing nearly 4 million cars from the road.
