REPUBLIC SERVICES’ TESSMAN ROAD LANDFILL
SOLAR COVER CONTINUES TO SHINE
San Antonio Site Wins Gold Medal from Texas Council of Engineering Companies
PHOENIX—December 15, 2009—The solar energy cover at Republic Services’ (NYSE:RSG)Tessman Road Landfill won a gold medal in the environmental category at the 2010 Texas Council of Engineering Companies (tcec) Engineering Excellence Awards. The project is eligible for a national award conferred by the American Council of Engineering Companies in April 2010.
“We are honored that this innovative technology has been recognized for its positive impact on the surrounding community,” said Chris Synek, senior vice president south for Republic. “We’re continually researching, developing and implementing innovative technologies to help us preserve and conserve our natural resources.”
Partnering with CPS Energy, Greater San Antonio’s electric and natural gas provider, Republic directed its engineering design firm, HDR Inc., to redesign the current landfill closure method to incorporate an exposed geomembrane cover system that would serve as a mounting surface for flexible photovoltaic (solar) panels.
The Engineering Excellence Awards Competition has been held by the Texas Council of
Engineering Companies since its inception in 1975 to honor and recognize outstanding
achievements within the engineering community. A panel of judges from Texas selected 12 Gold Medal and eight Silver Medal winning projects from 43 entries. Winners were selected based on uniqueness, originality, technical value to the engineering profession, complexity and how successfully the project met the needs of the client.
