40TH ANNIVERSARY

Company Divisions in 20 States Sponsor Community Events

PHOENIX—April 20, 2010—Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE:RSG), one of the world leaders of recycling, is proud to support Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary by encouraging its local divisions across the country to host or participate in environmental events and activities in the communities they serve.

Republic locations in 20 of the 40 states where it has operations are hosting or participating in community clean-ups, tree plantings, poster contests and recycling drop-offs.

“Environmental responsibility is our business. It is not one component, it’s what we do,” said Jim O’Connor, CEO and chairman of Republic. “We are environmentalists everyday, not just on Earth Day,”

Supporting Earth Day is one of the many ways that Republic demonstrates its commitment to sustainability and to improving the environment. Additional efforts include:

• The Company is deploying 226 new natural gas vehicles (NGV) in its western region and adding four new fueling facilities. Republic operates and maintains one of the largest private fleets in the country. The addition of 226 NGVs will bring the total number of Republic’s alternative fuel vehicles to more than 459 vehicles.

• As part of its core operations, Republic is providing long-term economical and environmental benefits through innovative uses for the gas that is produced in landfills. Captured landfill gas can be sold for use as heat or fuel or be converted and sold on the energy market as a renewable "green" power.

• EPA named three Republic landfill gas-to-energy projects as projects of the year for 2009. It acknowledged the projects for excellence in innovation and creativity, success in promoting project development, and achieving environmental and economic benefits.

• Republic covered part of a landfill in San Antonio, Texas with a first-of-its-kind closure system to generate solar energy.

• Republic co-sponsored the first-ever Residential Recycling Conference in 2010 that featured speakers from business, industry and government who focused on the best practices impacting the business and technology of residential recycling.

• The Company partnered with Southwest Airlines to implement recycling on all of the airline’s planes.

• Republic partnered with WasteSecure to provide its commercial customers with an environmentally safe process for disposing of fluorescent lamps.

• Republic is field-testing four pre-production diesel garbage trucks and the first American-built Mack Diesel Hybrid garbage truck.
