REPUBLIC SERVICES PUBLISHES SUSTAINABILITY REPORT
Company committed to sustainable world because “We live here, too.”
PHOENIX – July 14, 2010 – In every community that Republic (NYSE: RSG) serves, the Company has employees who live, work and play. They breathe the same air, drink the same water and their kids play in the same neighborhood parks. Republic takes good care of the environment because “we live here too.” The Company’s 2010 Sustainability Report describes the actions it took to minimize its impact on the environment while continuing to serve its customers.
In Republic’s first report in 2009, one of the actions it pledged to further its commitment to sustainability was to establish a Sustainability Team. The Company’s Sustainability Team includes innovators from across the various departments who are incorporating its environmental principles into a planning process, reducing its consumption of natural resources, and increasing renewable energy produced and used by its business.
“Taking out the trash is not as straightforward as it once was,” said Jim O’Connor, CEO of Republic Services. “More and more, our customers are looking for ways to reduce their own environmental impact, and our field representatives are working with them to meet their needs.”
The 2010 Sustainability Report describes a number of the Company’s efforts including:
- Co-organizing the inaugural Residential Recycling Conference which brought more than 500 attendees together with experts on residential recycling collection and processing and the sale of recycled commodities.Investing in more fuel efficient and cleaner-burning engines in its collection vehicles. Republic doubled the number of natural gas vehicles that it has on the road.
- Gaining recognition from the US EPA for three of our landfill gas-to-energy projects that were named Project of the Year.
The report is available at www.republicservices.com/sustainability. Additionally, Republic printed a limited number of reports. Printing was done on post-consumer recycled paper with vegetable-based inks. The paper was produced using non-polluting wind generated electricity and is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Green Seal.
