Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program Marks 25 Years

(Boise, ID) – Today, Ada County Commissioners were joined by Boise Mayor Dave Bieter and other city officials, for a celebration to kick-off the 25th Anniversary of the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Program in Ada County.

The celebration began with a news conference at the Ada County HHW Collection Facility, with representatives from several other participating agencies also in attendance including; Eagle Mayor Jim Reynolds, City of Meridian officials, PSC Environmental and Republic Services staff, Central District Health Department officials, and a number of others including current landfill staff and former Landfill Director Dave Neal.

Several speakers shared stories of how the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection program began back in 1989 as an annual one day event that quickly grew into an annual weekend event, and soon after expanded into the daily collection program it is today. Officials cited that the program’s success has been fueled by many years of effective collaboration among multiple agencies, as well as tremendous community support.

During the news conference, Ada County Commission Chairman Dave Case stated, “This program is a classic win-win, providing a benefit to program users and the community at-large, while doing what’s good for the environment and keeping hazardous chemicals out of the landfill.” Case also expressed his thanks to all of the agencies involved in making the HHW program a success, but particularly to the county residents whose participation makes the program thrive.

“Programs like this are only a success if the community responds. In this case the public support and participation has been incredible. From one event a year to an award-winning, daily collection program, Boise has embraced this program at every stage of its 25-year history,” said Mayor David Bieter. “It speaks tremendously to how much our residents care about their own livability and creating a lasting and vibrant community.”

Following the news conference, attendees toured the HHW facility and enjoyed a barbecue lunch provided by program contractor PSC Environmental. As a token of thanks, special HHW 25 th Anniversary logo water bottles will be given out to program participants at HHW collection sites over the next few months while supplies last.

The HHW Collection Program consists of city-sponsored household hazardous waste collection sites in Boise, Eagle, Kuna, and Meridian, as well as the county’s collection facility at the Ada County Landfill. The program provides a convenient method for households and qualifying businesses to dispose of a wide variety of hazardous wastes and chemicals, while allowing many of the household products to be offered free of charge for use by others through the Reuse Area located at the landfill collection facility. Tens of thousands of households and hundreds of businesses are served by this program each year, which equates to well over a million pounds of hazardous waste kept out of the Ada County Landfill.
