A 2020 Republic Services survey revealed that 75% of Americans view recycling as important but don't always do it. A quarter of these respondents cited a lack of understanding of what can and can't be recycled as a barrier. In the spirit of America Recycles Day, Republic Services wants to make sure everyone is informed on how to recycle correctly and efficiently.

- For starters, it’s important to
know what to throw . Make sure to research which items in your community are recycle-friendly. Normally, materials such as plastic water bottles, aluminum cans, and cardboard are recyclable. And, when in doubt, throw it out. - Secondly,
“Empty. Clean. Dry.™” is a recycling mantra to live by. Containers should be free of food and other residues before recycling. Take a few moments to rinse and dry items before tossing them in the recycling bin. - Additionally, don’t bag it. Plastic grocery bags and garbage bags cannot be recycled in your curbside bin. Instead, put your recyclables directly into your blue recycling container to ensure those loads don’t end up in the landfill.
- Lastly,
understand the “chasing arrows” symbol . It is a common misconception that numbers on the bottom of plastic materials indicate whether an item is recyclable. Be sure to check with your local recycling provider for specific guidance onrecycling plastics .
