When you’re clearing out the cobwebs this year, remember to think sustainably. Cardboard boxes, bottles and cans, and paper are all recyclable, while other common household items like old clothes, cleaning supplies, paint, and electronics can be given a second life.
See below for some eco-friendly DOs and DON’Ts to consider when tidying up this spring.
- DO: When clearing out clutter, consider if any of your empties can be recycled.

You can also opt for Republic Services’ simplee-waste recycling service , which is as easy as ordering a prepaid box and mailing your electronics off to Republic Services for secure disposal. - DON’T: When it comes to your closet, remember that clothes, shoes, and linens cannot be recycled at home. - DON’T: Much like electronics, paint needs to be handled with care. Old paint cans are another common item that can gather dust in your basement or garage. If you’re looking to get rid of them, make sure to keep these cans out of your recyclables. Donate, sell, or give away extra paint.
