As a part of our 101 Days of Summer Safety, we’re recognizing July as Distracted Driving Awareness Month. To mark the occasion, we’re encouraging our employees and their families to take the Safe Driver Pledge and commit to helping keep America’s roads safe.
Check out a few ways you can be a more focused driver and help keep your community safe while on the road:
- Buckle up. One of the easiest ways to be a safer driver – or passenger – is by wearing your seatbelt every time you’re in a vehicle. This helps keep you safe in the instance of an accident or other collision.
- Be aware. Keep your eyes on the road and be aware of your surroundings. Make sure you know where other vehicles are, if there are any
pedestrians near you, and that you’re paying attention to any traffic signals and speed changes. Paying attention to your surroundings and your vehicle is key to being a safe driver. - Stay unplugged. Being distracted while driving is a recipe for disaster and there’s no bigger distraction in your car than your phone. According to the
Arizona Chapter National Safety Council , approximately 69% of drivers who are between the ages of 18 and 64 use their cell phones on the road. Be committed to safety by not being on your phone while driving. And remember, to never text and drive. - Give large vehicles space and time. Larger vehicles – like garbage and recycling trucks – should be given extra space and time on the road. When driving around larger vehicles, make sure you’re giving them the space they need to operate safely by increasing your following distance and limiting your time in their blind spots. Also, don’t forget to be patient and give larger vehicles more time to turn, switch lanes, and come to a complete stop. This will help you and the drivers of larger vehicles stay safe.
