This guide will help you determine the right size residential or commercial dumpster for your next project.
Why Choosing the Right Size Dumpster Matters
Picking the appropriate dumpster size is more important than you may think. Before beginning any major cleanout, demolition or construction project, you’ll want to consider the types of materials you need to toss, about how much waste you may generate, where your dumpster will go and how long your project will last.
Taking time to assess different dumpster sizes can help you choose the most practical and cost-effective option. When you choose the right size dumpster, you can avoid overpaying for unused space or incurring overage fees.
Dumpster Sizes Explained
For one-time projects, Republic Services offers roll-off dumpsters ranging from 10 to 40 yards. For ongoing or recurring services, we also can provide small dumpster sizes, including 2-, 4-, 6-, and 8-yard options.
Here are the most common dumpster sizes we offer to our residential and commercial customers:
What Size Dumpster Do I Need?
To choose the right dumpster size, start by answering these three questions:
What type of project are you doing?
Are you cleaning out the garage, remodeling a bathroom or relocating your office? Understanding the scope of your project is the first step in determining which size dumpster will best suit your needs.
Small dumpsters, like our 10- and 15-yard options are best for small remodel projects and seasonal cleanouts. Larger sizes, like our 20- and 30-yard dumpsters are a great choice for roofing projects, light demolition, tree trimming and mid-sized remodels and cleanouts. Our largest option, the 40-yard dumpster, is ideal for bulk materials from large-scale renovations,
What do you need to throw away?
For heavy materials like brick, concrete, dirt, gravel, rocks and tile, we recommend a 10- or 15-yard roll-off dumpster with multiple pickups.
If you’re planning a big project with lighter, bulkier waste — such as yard debris, shingles, drywall, plaster, flooring and wood — opt for 30- to 40-yard dumpster.
How much waste do you expect?
The amount of waste is hard to gauge — especially when you’re looking at giant dumpsters. Instead of thinking in yards, picture your waste in pickup truck loads. A 10-yard dumpster can hold four standard pickup truck loads while a 40-yard dumpster can hold 16.
