FAQs
Collection Guidelines & Reporting an Issue
You may call the call center to report a missed pick up if you are a residential customer or commercial customer. Additionally, commercial customers may call their account manager directly.
Reasons waste may not be collected:
- Cart too far from the curb
- Container facing the wrong direction
- Overfilled or overweight container
- Insufficient space to service container or a car is blocking the container
- Unacceptable material in container
Republic Services operates as normal on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and minor holidays. The only days with absolutely no services are Christmas Day (12/25) and New Years Day (1/1).
For commercial customers who have a regular service schedule on Christmas Day or New Years Day, service will be the following day.
For residential customers, all services will be delayed by one day for that holiday, and the remainder of the week. For example, if Christmas day is on a Wednesday, residential service will be normal on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday customers will be serviced on Thursday, Thursday customers will be serviced on Friday, and Friday customers will be serviced on Saturday.
Recycling
Organic Waste Recycling
Yes, you may use bags, but only specific types.
- For residential customer, you may choose to leave material unbagged, you may bag it in paper bags, or you may use BPI certified compostable bags.
- For commercial customers, you may choose to leave your material unbagged, or you may use clear bags. These bags do not need to be compostable, but they must be see-through in order to avoid contamination charges.

Events
Yes. Events are required to follow state law (SB 1383 and AB 2175) and local mandates to ensure there is proper waste disposal receptacles and access, and that recycling and organic recycling is present at the event. Depending on the jurisdiction that the event is in, you may be required to fill out a Special Event Waste Management Plan. Republic Services can help you determine what containers you need (trash, recycle, and organics), give you tips on placement, give you event weights, and help you fill out the Event Waste Management Plan.
For events with 2,000 attendees or more, there is a post report you may have to complete with your jurisdiction. Republic Services can help you get the required information.
Ensure that there is a recycling and organics bin next to every trash bin, except for in areas where it doesn’t make sense. For example, there should only be a trash can next to restrooms, as paper towels/toilet paper are trash.
Set expectations with your vendors. Work with them in advance so they understand which of their items belong in each bin. Make sure they have a map of where the large waste containers are. Inform vendors that if one container is full, use a different one.
If possible, purchase items that are confirmed to be accepted in the recycling or organic recycling bin.
Reduce the amount of single-use disposable items that are handed out as “freebies” at the event.
Get all necessary permits in advance for the waste container on public rights-of-way
Ensure your hauler has seen your Event Waste Plan and agrees to it. Make sure you understand what aspects of the Event Waste Plan is completed by republic Services, and what aspects are completed by you.
General
Commercial and Industrial customers may call their account manager directly or call 916.631.0600
Elk Grove residential customers: 916.635.2500
Citrus Heights residential customers:916.638.9000
Yes.
For the Republic Services residential programs in Elk Grove and Citrus Heights, a Republic Services employee looks through bins in the morning before they are serviced. This employee looks through all carts that are at the curb, including the trash cart. They will leave a tag(s) on the cart(s) informing the customer if they are separating correctly, or what they did wrong. Depending on the amount of contamination, the customer may be charged a penalty.
For commercial and industrial customers, Republic Services uses a combination of employees and on-truck cameras to identify contamination. Please note that you may get a contamination fine just for using bags that are not clear in the recycling or organics container. If you are a commercial customer receiving excessive contamination fines, reach out to your account manager for educational material, and to work through the issue together so you may avoid penalties in the future.
HHW includes items that cannot be disposed of safely in ANY of your Republic Services containers. They can cause harm to employees, start fires, and even cause explosions. Some common examples include batteries, oil, paint, certain light bulbs, etc. There are several facilities in Sacramento County that will take these items for responsible disposal. Some locations take material for free, depending on their type of customer you are, the quantity you have, and what material it is. Call these locations for more information.
