Non-recyclables contaminate recycling loads and need to be removed during the sorting process. Some items may also contaminate clean recyclable items (ex. pasta sauce jar with sauce still in it, can soak into clean office paper which is then no longer recyclable either).
If our drivers notice a lot of contamination in your recycling cart or bin, we may not be able to service it as recycling and may tag it (Oops Tag) to have it serviced as trash (in which case there may be a charge).
Please note that all recyclable items should be
- Empty means making sure there is no food or product residue. Make sure all of that goes into the trash or down the drain as part of the EMPTY process.
- Clean means that empty recyclable containers should be rinsed. So, no mustard in the mustard containers or leftover ketchup in the ketchup bottles. If you cannot get a container completely clean, it is best to put it into the trash so as not to contaminate the rest of your recycling material and the overall process.
- Dry means letting containers dry before placing them in your green container so that the paper and cardboard doesn't get wet. Wet or soiled paper and cardboard cannot be recycled.
Trash Guidelines
Reducing waste is not just a philosophy it's a daily commitment to our customers and community. It's still important to find ways to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. The less we generate, the more sustainable we become. These tips will help you reduce your environmental impact:
Reduce
• Order items with minimal packaging.
• Print, copy and write on both sides of a sheet of paper when possible.
• Use dry-erase boards and overhead projectors for presentations instead of handing out copies.
• Make training manuals and company information available electronically, instead of in printed books and binders.
• Encourage your staff to use reusable coffee mugs, dishes, and utensils.
• Adopt an environmentally preferable purchasing policy.
Reuse
• Use refillable toner cartridges for printers. Non-refillable cartridges contain between two and three pounds of plastic and metal.
• Send documents between offices and departments in reusable envelopes.
• Reuse corrugated boxes for shipping supplies between offices.
• Buy refillable pens and mechanical pencils. Pencils and the outer casings of pens can come in various reclaimed materials, such as recycled newspaper, plastic, rubber, and even recycled dollar bills.
• Use the blank side of printouts as scratch paper or to take notes.
• Use a refillable water bottle instead of single-use plastics.
• Reduce food waste by
o Consume food prior to the expiration date
o Prepare what you plan to eat
o Save leftovers
Donate
• Donate unwanted office supplies to nonprofit organizations, charities, schools, or used materials exchanges.
• Give excess building materials and supplies from renovations to low-income housing developers or non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity.
• Donate cafeteria leftovers.
- Place Christmas trees at the curb on the green waste collection day. Remember to remove all tinsel, lights and ornaments.
- Break down gift boxes and cardboard boxes, and put them in the recycle cart. If they are too big to fit in your cart once broken down, call Republic Services at 713-726-7307 for a bulk cardboard pickup. Do not forget to remove all packaging materials.
- Cooking oil can be dropped off at the Public Works Service Center at 101A Gillingham Lane, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Just sign in at the front desk. The Service Center will be closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
- Donate first, and recycle second. Donate unwanted clothing and other textile items to local charities. Textiles that are not donated may be recycled. Put the items in the textile bags that the city provides for textile recycling or in boxes labeled with the green tag, available on the city’s website at
https://www.sugarlandtx.gov/ .- Recycle old electronics by visiting the Fort Bend County Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1200 Blume Road, Rosenberg, TX 77471 or local retailers who may also provide electronic recycling services.
- Use reusable bags or totes while doing holiday shopping to reduce the consumption of plastic bags.

No, Republic Services does not collect or accept hazardous waste.
During Fiscal Year 2020, City of Sugar Land staff conducted a review of the on-call Household Hazardous Waste program and determined that less than five percent of residents utilize the collection services. Rather than continue a program subsidized by all residents and only used by a few, the City determined that the most economically responsible option was to eliminate the program at the conclusion of 2020.
Effective January 1, 2021, the City’s Household Hazardous Waste program is no longer provided as a service.
