- Make the recycling bin visible. First things first, have a recycling container available for guests and remind them that everything that goes in the bin needs to be empty, clean and dry. If someone isn’t sure an item is recyclable, it’s best to put it in the trash. Make it easy for your guests by printing and taping this handy
sign to the container.
- Choose gas or electric for outdoor grilling. Most outdoor grills are fueled by charcoal or gas. Gas is more efficient for cooking, plus gas and electric grills burn cleaner than charcoal and produce a smaller carbon footprint.
- Use the real stuff. Show your guests how special they are by breaking out the real dishes instead of paper plates and plastic forks and knives. It makes for a nice presentation, and somehow, food just seems to taste better when you use real plates and utensils. Guests will appreciate your sustainable efforts – and might even pitch in to help wash!
- Go for always-recyclable aluminum. Choose beverages in aluminum cans instead of plastic. Aluminum can be recycled infinitely and making a new can from recycled aluminum uses 95% less energy than making the same can from raw materials.
No matter how you decide to celebrate Memorial Day this year, remember to keep in mind the safety and health of each other – and the environment. Learn more about how to recycle correctly at
