
Honoring Black History Month by Investing in Communities
Republic Services and the Republic Services Charitable Foundation support diverse neighborhoods. Through critical repair projects in historically Black neighborhoods in Los Angeles and St. Louis, Republic is investing in underserved communities.Byline: BTB Editor
February 19, 2021 / Time to read: 5 minFor more than 50 years, Black History Month has served as a reminder for all people to pause, learn, listen, and honor the unique and challenging history that has shaped our nation. And it’s a time to remember that traditionally Black neighborhoods across America have experienced decades of disinvestment. In honor of Black History Month, we wanted to share how Republic Services is working to restore communities.
At our core,
Across the country, the Foundation is supporting 135 small business revitalization projects through partnerships with 29 local nonprofit affiliates via Republic’s Committed to Serve initiative, including support for several minority-and women-owned businesses in Los Angeles, St. Louis, and several other areas.
Preserving Community Hubs in Leimert Park, Los Angeles
A community without space to safely gather or without outdoor recreation activities is a community without a soul. To help preserve the soul of the Leimert Park neighborhood in Los Angeles – a predominately Black neighborhood – the Foundation partnered with
Regency West, a neighborhood icon that has been in the same family since its inception over 40 years ago, is a restaurant and banquet hall. Thanks to the grant funding, RTCOA is adding an entrance to the side of the building to improve flow and is converting a section of the parking area into an outdoor seating and eating area. These renovations will allow Regency West to safely remain open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Committed to serving her community, Ride On! Bike Shop and Co-Op owner Adé E. Neff has struggled during COVID-19 to safely serve customers. More than just a bike shop, RideOn! hosts bike safety workshops and other events to advocate for equitable infrastructure in the community. With assistance from RTCOA, Ride On! will be able to renovate and expand the space, including a bathroom, showroom space, bike racks, lighting, air conditioning, and outside beautification.
Helping Educators in St. Louis
Through a contribution to Rebuilding Together, the Foundation is supporting the educators and families of

Thanks to funding from a Committed to Serve grant, Rebuilding Together St. Louis is making improvements to the school that will keep students safe as they return to in-person learning. One of those key repairs is a new heating and cooling system that not only will keep students comfortable throughout the year but will also filter air and reduce health risks associated with airborne diseases.
