Toray Advanced Composites Meets Sustainability Goals with Customized Containerized Waste Diversion Solutions
See how we helped a leading aerospace industry supplier manage complex waste streams and reduce costs with a custom drum and containerized waste program.Byline: BTB Author
June 16, 2026 / Time to read: 5 minACTenviro, now part of Republic Services, developed a creative, out-of-the-box program to manage materials responsibly, divert waste from landfills, reduce costs and support Toray’s sustainability goals.
The Challenge
With their production of advanced composite materials used to manufacture lightweight structures for commercial, military and unmanned aircraft, Toray generates several waste streams — many of which are particularly complex. These highly specialized waste streams include non-RCRA solids, flammable liquids and corrosive lab materials.
One of the biggest challenges was the size and handling requirements of certain materials. Toray generated 8-foot-long amine rolls — composite material rolls containing chemical curing agents — which were difficult to handle and transport because of their length and weight. The rolls could not be cut for safety reasons and required grinding prior to disposal at waste-to-energy (WTE) facilities. Additionally, most treatment, storage and disposal facilities (TSDF) cannot accommodate the required preprocessing for material that size. On top of the handling and transportation challenges Toray faced with these rolls, limited onsite space made it difficult to build efficient loads for disposal.
Toray’s main goal? Safely and compliantly divert all waste — whether stored in drums, cubic yard boxes or totes or managed through vacuum trucks — away from landfills and transport to more sustainable treatment solutions.
The Solution
Toray needed a highly coordinated, customized approach to manage their diverse waste streams safely, compliantly and sustainably.
By combining
To ensure consistency and compliance, our onsite services technician prepared all waste for transportation. Our team profiled each waste stream and routed them based on treatment method — from oil, metal and carbon fiber recycling to WTE and fuel blending — while also accounting for transportation distance, approved facilities and cost considerations.
To address the challenges posed by the 8-foot amine rolls, we provided a 53-foot trailer for onsite storage and consolidation. This solution enabled Toray to build full truckloads, which helped
For high-volume non-RCRA solids, including epoxy and resin debris streams that often amounted to tens of thousands of pounds per shipment, we secured direct shipments to WTE and fuel blending. While many generators do not produce enough waste to qualify for fuel blending, we were able to meet volume requirements by consolidating similar waste streams into full truckloads. Smaller volumes of waste were routed through our 10-day network, providing Toray access to preferred waste treatment technologies without requiring full shipments.
Our containerized waste solutions not only facilitated transportation and disposal — it also streamlined Toray’s material management, tracking and prep. By centralizing drum, tote and cubic yard box management into one program, we were able to cut down on administrative burden and ensure compliance every step of the way.
Our continued partnership with Toray includes the transportation of:
- Full truckloads to a third-party TSDF facility for WTE treatment
- Recurring shipments to local service centers in San Jose or Sacramento where materials are sorted into trailers before they’re transported to various TSDF facilities
- Non-RCRA solids for proper WTE treatment
- Flammable liquids to ACT Treatment for fuel blending
The Outcome
With the expert guidance, creative problem-solving and strategic approach of our account management team, Toray was able to exceed their sustainability goals while maintaining high production. The program successfully diverted a significant volume of waste from landfills, routing materials through universal recycling, WTE, fuel blending and other compliant treatment methods. By consolidating waste with our containerized waste solutions into full truckloads and implementing recurring service schedules, Toray reduced transportation costs and minimized production disruptions.
Thanks to years of strong communication, consistent service and competitive pricing, we expanded our partnership to Toray facilities in Morgan Hill, CA in 2022 and Englewood, CO in 2026. We recently extended our contract and have additional opportunities under consideration.
