Recycling services at Newby Island
The Recyclery at Newby Island is the most advanced recycling facility in the world with the ability to process (sort) more material per hour and recover very high percentages of recyclables. The system in place consists of four processing lines designed to process 400,000 tons per year. This processing system allows Republic Services to sort through organics and recyclables to divert as much material as possible from the landfill.

Disposal facility
The Newby Island landfill opened in 1938 and with the number of diversion practices in place, Republic Services expects the landfill to remain available for many more years. This disposal site accepts industrial wastes, grit, screenings, wastewater treatment sludge, contaminated soils, clean soils and municipal solid waste.
The NIRRP landfill footprint is a total of 342 acres and is permitted to accept up to 4,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day.

Compressed natural gas (CNG)
Republic Services' Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling station serves to fuel our fleet of 60 trucks. This innovative approach to fueling Republic Services' collection and service vehicle fleet offers an effective alternative to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Not only does CNG fuel provide 65 percent less emissions than "clean diesel" trucks, it also contributes up to an 80 percent reduction in noise pollution.

Construction & demolition (C & D)
Found near the rear of the NIRRP property, Republic Services operates a C&D material processing facility able to divert approximately 90 percent of C&D material from the landfill. Materials like concrete, asphalt, drywall, wood and scrap metals are all mined out for reuse.

Republic Services' state-of-the-art organics recycling program delivers the most environmentally responsible, efficient, and cost-effective organics recycling services to our customers. We turn yard and food waste scraps into nutrient-rich, certified organic compost that is used by local businesses, residents, school districts, and parks.
Currently the Newby Island Organics Facility markets more than 100,000 cubic yards of compost, mulch, and wood chips each year. Sales of our trademark Super Compost are extensive, reaching as far north as Sacramento and Cloverdale and as far south as Salinas and Carmel. With an extensive list of customers throughout northern California, the facility has grown from 216 tons per day in 1988 to an average of 625 tons per day currently.
