If our drivers notice a lot of contamination in your recycle cart or bin, we may not be able to service it as recycling and may tag it to have it serviced as trash (in which case you may be charged).
Use the green cart for co-mingled organic materials. Organics will be collected each week on the same day as garbage and recyclables.

Cleaning out your garage or attic?
Effective July 1, 2018, Bulk Item Clean-up is an included service for single-family residential service subscribers up to the annual limit of 2 collections per year of up to 6 cubic yards each (total annual limit of 12 cubic yards). Bulk item collection is provided on an on-call basis by Republic Services. Please call 800-320-8077 to schedule a collection and refer to the service guide at the top of this page for more information on accepted items.
The ONLY “compostable plastic” item we accept is BPI-Certified Compostable Bags.
- An even better alternative to line your food scrap pail would be to use a paper bag, newspaper, or paper towels.
- The compost facility is not able to accept other “compostable plastic” items (such as corn-based utensils, Green Strip cups, etc.) even if they are BPI-Certified, because these items do not break down fast enough or completely.
Be careful of “green-washing” – items marketed as better for the environment, but may still not be truly compostable or recyclable. For example, items may be labeled “biodegradable” or “bio-based” – this does NOT necessarily mean it is truly compostable.
- Compostable plastics are also not recyclable. These items need to be thrown in the landfill.

From our partner
Electronic equipment should NOT be disposed of with regular garbage, as this is illegal in California. Many electronic devices contain toxic chemicals that can leak from the landfill into groundwater and soil, contaminating our ecosystem. Recycle them properly at your local household hazardous waste drop-off facility for free, or at participating stores.

Multi-Family Recycling Information
Recycling conserves natural resources, like trees and water, saves energy. Composting food scraps helps return valuable nutrients to the soil and reduces the amount of organic material ending up in landfills. Both are important in helping Piedmont meet county and state-mandated goals for reducing waste disposed in local landfills.
These containers were designed for indoor storage in units with small kitchen cabinets, closets and storage areas. This leak-proof, heavy-duty bag makes it convenient for residents to collect and carry jars, bottles, cans, paper and other recyclables. Just empty the bag into the complex's shared container and return to the unit for reuse.
Each multi-family residence is entitled to one free recycling tote bag for indoor storage of recyclables and transport to the outdoor collection containers.
Recycling bags are available from your complex management office or Republic Services.
Cardboard should be flattened before being placed in the recycling cart/bin.

State Law Requires More Businesses to Compost, January 2019
Under State of California laws AB 341 and AB 1826, certain businesses and institutions are required to recycle and compost. As of January 1, 2019, the State requires more sites to have organics collection service; businesses and multi-family properties that generate 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week must have organics collection service.
Materials that must be composted include food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, non-hazardous wood waste, and food-soiled paper.
AB 341 has required recycling at many businesses since July 1, 2012. Materials that must be recycled include bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard.
Additionally, the Mandatory Composting and Recycling law in Alameda County requires businesses to sort their waste into the proper containers.
