Collection Guidelines & Reporting an Issue
Residential Customers
Carts must be set out for service by 6:00am on your designated collection day.
Business Customers
Carts or bins must be set out for service by 4:00am on your designated collection day.
Solid Waste Guidelines
- All trash must be contained in the cart or bin issued by Republic Services.
- All household trash should be bagged. Bagging your trash will help keep the cart or bin clean and sanitary, and prevent litter on windy days.
- For proper servicing and public health reasons, the lids must be completely closed. If the lid is not closed due to the cart or bin being overfilled you will be subject to an overload charge.
- If extra bags are placed outside the cart or bin you will be subject to an extra bag charge.
- Please call Republic Services to upgrade your trash service to avoid these charges.
- The carts and bins remain the property of Republic Services. Please do not take them with you when you move.
- Place carts at least 6 feet away from any automobiles, mailboxes or anything else that would impede our ability to service.
- Salinas code requires that basketball hoops are removed from the street on collection day
- For residential customers the placement of your cart is very important, since the collection vehicle’s lifting arm requires clearance of 3 feet on both sides of the cart and 12 feet overhead.
- Carts should be facing toward the street with the hinges facing away from the street.
Items that CANNOT be placed in the trash container: construction and demolition debris, dirt, sod, concrete, rock, hot ashes, hazardous waste, batteries, light bulbs, tires, medical waste or flammable materials such as oil, gas and paint.
Bulk Pickup
Customers are entitled to one free bulk pickup per year. To ensure bulk items can be safely removed with our grapple truck, they must be placed on the street, against the curb and away from carts, trees, parked cars, overhead wires and other obstructions. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 831-775-3840.
Acceptable items include: chairs, mattresses, couches, furniture, appliances, water heaters, e-waste, etc.
Non-acceptable items include: loose, boxed or bagged trash, carpet, construction material, wood, paint, batteries, chemicals or hazardous waste.

Zero Waste Tips You Can Feel Good About
Achieving zero waste is not just a philosophy; it's a daily commitment to our customers and community. It's still important to find ways to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. The less we generate, the closer we are to zero waste. These tips will help you achieve zero waste:
Reduce
- Order items with minimal packaging.
- Print, copy, and write on both sides of a sheet of paper when possible.
- Use dry-erase boards and overhead projectors for presentations instead of handing out copies.
- Make training manuals and company information available electronically, instead of in printed books and binders.
- Encourage your staff to use reusable coffee mugs, dishes, and utensils.
- Adopt an environmentally preferable purchasing policy.
Reuse
- Use refillable toner cartridges for printers. Non-refillable cartridges contain between two and three pounds of plastic and metal!
- Send documents between offices and departments in reusable envelopes.
- Reuse corrugated boxes for shipping supplies between offices.
- Buy refillable pens and mechanical pencils. Pencils and the outer casings of pens can come in a variety of reclaimed materials, such as recycled newspaper, plastic, rubber, and even recycled dollar bills.
- Use the blank side of printouts as scratch paper or to take notes.
Donate
- Donate unwanted office supplies to nonprofit organizations, charities, schools or used materials exchanges.
- Give excess building materials and supplies from renovations to low-income housing developers or non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity.
- Donate cafeteria leftovers.
Special & Household Hazardous Waste
- We offer residential customers free used motor oil and filter recycling weekly on your regular service day.

The ONLY “compostable plastic” items we accept are BPI-Certified compostable bags, utensils, napkins, cups and plates.
- An even better alternative to line your food scrap pail would be to use a paper bag, newspaper, or paper towels.
- The compost facility is not able to accept other “compostable plastic” items (such as corn-based utensils, Green Strip cups, etc.) even if they are BPI-Certified, because these items do not break down fast enough or completely.
- Compostable plastics are also not recyclable. These items need to be thrown in the landfill.
We offer 20, 32, and 64 gallon carts.
We also offer 1 and 2 yard bins.
Composting for Business
Close nature's loop by composting your food scraps. Rather than going to the landfill, food scraps can be processed into compost, which enriches soil naturally.
Benefits of Composting:
- Potential to reduce disposal costs
- Improve your image as an environmental leader
- Reduce waste going to a landfill
- Prevent greenhouse gas emissions
Compostable materials:
- Food Scraps: fruits, vegetables, meat, seafood, dairy, eggs, breads, pastas, tea bags, coffee grounds
- BPI certified: compostable bags, utensils, napkins, cups and plates.
- Unacceptable materials:
- Plastics (all types)
- Styrofoam
- Glass
- Metals
- Grease trappings or tallow
- Liquids
- Butcher shop, packinghouse or slaughterhouse waste
- Canned food
- Bagged food
- Rubber bands
- Wax paper
State Law Requires More Businesses to Compost, January 2019
Under State of California laws AB 341 and AB 1826, certain businesses and institutions are required to recycle and compost. As of January 1, 2019, the State requires more sites to have organics collection service; businesses and multi-family properties that generate 4 or more cubic yards of solid waste per week must have organics collection service.
Materials that must be composted include food waste, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, non-hazardous wood waste, and food-soiled paper.
AB 341 has required recycling at many businesses since July 1, 2012. Materials that must be recycled include bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard.
Additionally, the Mandatory Composting and Recycling law in the City of Salinas requires businesses to sort their waste into the proper containers.
