Building information
The architecture of the building was engineered using recycled and repurposed materials, and features various elements of sustainability throughout the facility.

Remanufactured building
More than 75% of the building is made from recycled and remanufactured steel. The natural landscape was preserved and repurposed to make aggregate for the flood channels surrounding the building. Water efficient automatic low-flow fixtures were installed to conserve water, reducing consumption by more than 20%. High solar reflectance index roof materials were installed to minimize heat retention in the building.

Capabilities
The Southern Nevada Recycling Center serves almost 620,000 households throughout the area, including the cities of North Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Henderson, and Clark County. The Center can process 70 tons of mixed recyclables an hour and 270,000 tons a year.

Generates solar
The Center features a large photovoltaic rooftop solar energy system comprised of 1,776 panels to harness the renewable resource. The system generates 933,162 kilowatts of energy per year, which constitutes more than 15 percent of the building’s power consumption. Over the next 30 years the building’s solar energy system will offset greenhouse gas emissions equal to 38 million miles driven by local motorists.

Say no to recycling contamination
On average, recycling contamination levels are at 30% which means the separation of clean recyclables from contaminated material is more important than ever.
Technology at the new facility is state of the art, but even the most advanced scanning and sorting equipment can’t weed out all contamination.

The recycling facility uses highly advanced sorting technologies to process 350 tons of recyclable material per day, separating material in milliseconds.

Empty. Clean. Dry.™
Clean recyclables don’t contaminate other types of materials, so the recycle stream stays out of the landfill.
When in doubt, throw it out.
If it has food waste, it belongs in the trash. Just one dirty bottle can contaminate the contents of a whole recycling truck.
Know what to throw.
Paper & cardboard, metal cans, plastic bottles, and jugs (with lids).
Don't bag it.
Don’t bag your recyclables – place them in your recycling container loosely. Grocery bags and other flexible plastics will get caught in the machinery.
Never place these items in your recycling container. They cannot be recycled with your household waste. Look over this list to make sure you’re putting only reusable materials in your container. These items cannot go into recycling.
