The Seattle, WA interactive learning center was designed to educate community groups, students, sustainability leaders, and our governmental partners about recycling. Visitors will experience a first-hand view of the recycling process at our education center through a presentation, educational videos, interactive displays, and various activities tailored to your group.

No. Do not place plastic bags in your curbside bins for recycling.
The best way to recycle your plastic bags is to bundle them, clean and dry, in one bag and bring them to a store that collects them for recycling. Visit King County's
Non-recyclables contaminate recycling loads and need to be removed during the sorting process. Some items may also contaminate clean recyclable items (ex. pasta sauce jar with sauce still in it can soak into clean office paper which is then no longer recyclable either).
If our drivers notice a lot of contamination in your recycle cart we may not be able to service it as recycling and may tag it to have it serviced as trash (in which case you may be charged).
When in doubt...find out or throw it out in the garbage.

Free motor oil collection for residential customers
- At no extra cost, residential customers can place motor oil (but not filters) in sealed containers for curbside collection.
- Limit is two gallons per month per residence.

It is illegal in Washington to improperly dispose of oil. If you’re one of the nearly 60 percent of Americans who change their own motor oil, you can recycle the oil and filter at several local auto parts and repair shops.

- No single item may weigh more than 50 pounds or be longer than 4 feet. Bags cannot weigh more than 50 pounds.
- No large car parts (tires, transmission blocks, engines, etc.), furniture, or mattresses.
- Mattresses can be scheduled for a special pickup for a fee, call Republic Services at 253-872-4632 for a quote and to schedule.
- Mattresses and box springs (up to 6 per customer per day) can also be disposed of at any King County Transfer Station, or they can be recycled through programs throughout the area. Visit

Fluorescent tubes and bulbs contain mercury which is very toxic to human and animal health. Do not put fluorescent tubes or bulbs in your recycling, garbage, or yard waste containers.

- Tubes must be no longer than 4 feet.
- Wrap old bulbs securely in newspaper secured with tape or place bulbs in closed plastic bags and label, “Fluorescent Bulbs”.
