The art of the cart.
Grey is for garbage. Green is for recycling!
Great news! You already use a Republic Services cart for your recycling service; as part of the enhanced curbside waste collection services provided by Republic Services, all City of Morgantown residents* received a grey trash cart.
- Trash carts are grey, have large handles and wheels, and have the graphic below molded onto the lid
- Carts are 95-gallon in size - see Customer Request for Small Capacity Cart Exchange (35-gallon) section below
- A grey trash cart should be used in place of any other personal trash container. Place the cart opening toward the road for collection, and 4’ from other obstacles
- The QR code in the lid graphic will take you to a newly developed website, which is a central point to get up-to-date information on your service, kids’ resources, ways to contact us, and more!
- Your green cart will continue to be used for your unbagged, single-stream recycling as normal
- Don’t have a green recycling cart? Let us know! While optional, participating in the weekly recycling collection is a great way to reduce waste in your cart, and preserve the planet for future generations!
*Some residents are part of a multi-unit structure with alternate trash collection procedures in place and will not utilize carts.

Recycling information from Morgantown City:
Non-recyclables contaminate recycling loads and need to be removed during the sorting process. Some items may also contaminate clean recyclable items (ex. pasta sauce jar with sauce still in it, can soak into clean office paper which is then no longer recyclable either).
If our drivers notice a lot of contamination in your recycling cart or bin, we may not be able to service it as recycling and may tag it (Oops Tag) to have it serviced as trash (in which case there may be a charge).
Please note that all recyclable items should be
- Empty means making sure there is no food or product residue. Make sure all of that goes into the trash or down the drain as part of the EMPTY process.
- Clean means that empty recyclable containers should be rinsed. So, no mustard in the mustard containers or leftover ketchup in the ketchup bottles. If you cannot get a container completely clean, it is best to put it into the trash so as not to contaminate the rest of your recycling material and the overall process.
- Dry means letting containers dry before placing them in your green container so that the paper and cardboard doesn't get wet. Wet or soiled paper and cardboard cannot be recycled.
Trash Guidelines
Reducing waste is not just a philosophy it's a daily commitment to our customers and community. It's still important to find ways to reduce the amount of waste that is generated. The less we generate, the more sustainable we become. These tips will help you reduce your environmental impact:
Reduce
• Order items with minimal packaging.
• Print, copy and write on both sides of a sheet of paper when possible.
• Use dry-erase boards and overhead projectors for presentations instead of handing out copies.
• Make training manuals and company information available electronically, instead of in printed books and binders.
• Encourage your staff to use reusable coffee mugs, dishes, and utensils.
• Adopt an environmentally preferable purchasing policy.
Reuse
• Use refillable toner cartridges for printers. Non-refillable cartridges contain between two and three pounds of plastic and metal.
• Send documents between offices and departments in reusable envelopes.
• Reuse corrugated boxes for shipping supplies between offices.
• Buy refillable pens and mechanical pencils. Pencils and the outer casings of pens can come in various reclaimed materials, such as recycled newspaper, plastic, rubber, and even recycled dollar bills.
• Use the blank side of printouts as scratch paper or to take notes.
• Use a refillable water bottle instead of single-use plastics.
• Reduce food waste by
o Consume food prior to the expiration date
o Prepare what you plan to eat
o Save leftovers
Donate
• Donate unwanted office supplies to nonprofit organizations, charities, schools, or used materials exchanges.
• Give excess building materials and supplies from renovations to low-income housing developers or non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity.
• Donate cafeteria leftovers.
Christmas tress will be collected on trash collection days through the month of January.
Additionally, the City of Morgantown Public Works Department holds an annual Christmas tree drop-off and collection event during the first two weeks of January. Christmas trees are donated to the Department of Natural Resources to enhance fish habitat in local lakes and reservoirs. Contact the City of Morgantown's Public Works Department at 304-2917465 for more information.

Republic Services can accept paint at the curb once the paint is completely dried up. Mixing kitty litter or sawdust in the can of paint will help speed the solidification process. Once paint is dry, place the cans at the curb outside your waste cart, with lids off for visual inspection. Republic Services is not able to accept liquids in solid waste collection.
Medicine and prescription drugs are hazardous and must not go in the trash or be flushed or poured down the drain. Remove any personal information from original containers and find pharmaceutical/medicine take-back locations.
Medical Waste
Pharmacies, medication suppliers, local hospitals, and doctor’s offices often provide disposal options for medical waste such as syringes, needles, or sharps. These items should never be placed loosely in the garbage cart or in your recycle cart.Medications
Residents can dispose of unused or expired medication by purchasing a postage-paid envelope from local pharmacies such as CVS, Walgreens, and Kroger or holding the medication until the next DEA collection event. Controlled substances are excluded from the program. Visit the City of Morgantown's Recycling Guide on local resources to safely dispose of medication.
Needles
Needles should be placed in a sturdy plastic container with a tight-fitting lid such as a laundry detergent bottle. The bottle then needs to be taped shut and labeled syringes, sharps, or needles. The bottle can then be placed in your garbage cart. Do not put this container in your recycle cart.
National prescription drug take-back
The DEA’s Take Back Day events provide an opportunity for the public to safely dispose of prescription medication anonymously. This event is held twice annually at no charge. For information on the dates and locations of this event, visit the
